Most Popular Cat Breeds: What the Rankings Actually Tell You

By PawNest Team

The most popular cat breeds, according to real registry rankings, reveal what people love most — and why mixed-breed cats deserve equal consideration.

Most cats curled up on couches across America aren't pedigreed at all — they're mixed-breed domestic shorthairs and longhairs, and they make wonderful, loving pets. But if you've ever wondered which specific cat breeds people actively seek out, there's a real, tracked answer, and it says a lot about what people find most appealing in a cat's looks and personality.

How cat breed popularity is actually measured

Unlike dogs, where the AKC tracks registrations, pedigreed cat popularity in the US is tracked by the [Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA)](https://cfa.org/cat-talk/most-popular-breeds-for-2026/), the oldest feline registry, which publishes an annual ranking each March based on the prior year's registration data. It's worth remembering this reflects registered pedigreed cats specifically — the vast majority of pet cats in American homes are mixed-breed, and CFA's list says nothing about which cats make the best companions, only which breeds people are formally registering.

The breeds currently topping the list

According to CFA's most recent rankings, the most popular pedigreed breeds include:

- **Maine Coon** — a large, gentle "gentle giant" breed known for sociability and a shaggy, water-resistant coat
- **Ragdoll** — prized for a docile temperament and striking blue eyes
- **Persian** — a long-coated breed known for a calm, sweet disposition
- **Exotic Shorthair** — shares the Persian's build and personality with an easier-to-maintain short coat
- **Devon Rex** — a curly-coated, highly social breed that was the most popular shorthair for several years running
- **Abyssinian** — an active, athletic breed known for a ticked coat and curious personality
- **British Shorthair** — a dense-coated, easygoing breed with a famously calm temperament
- **Siberian** — Russia's national breed, often noted for lower allergen production
- **American Shorthair** — a sturdy, adaptable breed with a long history in American households
- **Russian Blue** — known for a plush silver-blue coat and a somewhat reserved, quiet personality

What draws people to each of these breeds

Looking down that list, a pattern emerges: people are often drawn to cats that are notably sociable and dog-like in affection (Ragdolls, Maine Coons), strikingly calm and low-key (Persians, British Shorthairs, Russian Blues), or distinctively textured and unusual-looking (Devon Rex, Abyssinian). None of this means a mixed-breed cat can't have exactly these same traits — coat texture and general temperament tendencies show up across mixed-breed cats too, just without a registered pedigree attached.

Choosing by temperament, not just breed name

If a specific trait on this list appeals to you — extreme sociability, a calm lap-cat personality, low grooming needs — it's worth researching that trait directly rather than assuming every cat of a given breed will match the description. Individual cats vary substantially even within a breed, and a shelter cat evaluated by staff for exactly the traits you want (affectionate, calm, food-motivated, tolerant of other pets) can be just as reliable a match as seeking out a specific pedigree. Frequently asked questions

**Is the Maine Coon really the most popular cat breed?** Among CFA-registered pedigreed cats, yes, the Maine Coon has recently topped the rankings, but this reflects formal registrations, not the overall US cat population, which is dominated by mixed-breed cats.

**Are popular breeds like Ragdolls and Maine Coons good for first-time cat owners?** Generally yes — both are frequently described as sociable and easygoing, though any cat's suitability depends on the individual animal's personality and your household's routine.

**Do mixed-breed cats have less predictable personalities than purebreds?** Not necessarily — a shelter's staff can often describe a specific mixed-breed cat's temperament in detail from direct observation, which can be just as reliable as breed reputation.

**Are pedigreed cats healthier than mixed-breed cats?** Not automatically — some pedigreed breeds carry known genetic predispositions, while mixed-breed cats often benefit from greater genetic diversity, so health depends more on the individual cat and its care than on pedigree status.

Breed popularity lists are a fun starting point, but the cat that ends up choosing your lap is rarely the one you planned for on paper — spend time with any cat, pedigreed or not, before deciding they're the one.
